Pumpkin Playdate

Thank You So Much for Praying!

Ellie and friend

... for my very fist playdate in Japan! I really felt like this was my "official" kickoff to ministry here, so it was very exciting for me. For a while I thought I might have to call it off... Ellie has been congested and coughing, and I started to have a pretty bad sore throat. But thanks to God and Ibuprofen, we pushed through it and it turned out to be lots of fun.

We were going to have 2 moms and 4 kids, but as the children were being dismissed, one of the invited girls started announcing to all the friends around her that she's going to Ellie's house. So another girl said, "I want to come, too!" Well, that was just fine with me, so I invited her and her mom right there on the spot, so now the number was 3 moms and 5 kids, plus Ellie and me.

So there was my little girl, with her friends -- all holding hands making a long chain of 6 happy girls.

I decided to do a little pumpkin theme since...

Japan is just recently getting into the Halloween decorations. They still don't go trick-or-treating, but some are beginning to purchase small pumpkins or even have dress-up Halloween parties. Anyway, I had the girls make a Jack-o-lantern mask with paper plates, and the moms made pumpkin muffins, using the canned pumpkin that I purchased from Costco. They had loads of fun painting and gluing, and the moms seemed to be very impressed with such a simple craft, so I was happy about that.

The most meaningful part was the time the moms got to chat downstairs while the girls played upstairs. We talked about many things: how the Japanese husbands still go to work very early, and come home very late (they told me that 10pm is early). They told me that they cannot be relied on, so the moms end up doing all the childraising themselves.

At one point of the talk, one of the moms even asked me, "What is the difference between Catholics and Protestants?" Well let me tell you what we believe, I said:) I was briefly able to mention the fact that our focus is upon Jesus Christ as our Savior, and that Jesus in fact is God. I was thinking in my head, "Wow, I wasn't expecting to be able to say that in the first playdate!"

Anyway, everyone went home happy, and all agreed that we must do this again. Please pray for these ladies and their children, that I will continue to get to know them better, and for many more opportunities to share Jesus with them.

Oh, by the way, we will be gone to Hiroshima (down south) until next Tuesday, for an Asian Access church planter's retreat. Please pray for a safe trip, and for Zack to not get so far behind in his school work while he's gone.
