Zack the Kendo Missionary

Our next door neighbor, Mr. Maniwa, is a kendo teacher. He told us about kendo and he gave me a kendo stick [sword] too. (Note: for those of you who do not know what this is, it is a Japanese sport, much like fencing). Then he told me about a kendo class near here. Then me and my dad went out on our bikes to the school. Then we got to go inside and watch the kendo practice. It is a very interesting sport.

After I watched, a teacher came over to me and said, “Do you want to try?”, and then he let me hit him on his head, his side, and his wrist. And then Mr. Maniwa came and he started talking really fast in Japanese. Then another student came and translated. She said, “Hold the kendo stick about a fist away from your stomach.” It would be more interesting if I understood Japanese.

Thank you for reading my blog.

(Note from Nozomi: I am very proud of Zack for even going to observe this class! And he had enough courage to try it out when he was asked. Zack is learning to be a wonderful missionary by stepping out of his comfort zone and trying out different things in order to meet others, and to make Mr. Maniwa happy by showing interest in his sport. Go Zack!!)
