Asian Access: Changing the few who change the many

Advancement & Communications

Jeffrey S. Johnston

Currently, I am serving as Vice President for Advancement. This role has two parts: 1) Development (helping the president with fundraising); and 2) Communications. I am privileged to share what God is doing in Asia with all of our Asian Access constituents.

In terms of communications, some of the areas I oversee include:

Asian Access Leadership

I serve as a part of the senior leadership at Asian Access (A2) helping to provide oversight and direction for the ministry. In addition, I am a member of the iTeam (infrastructure) and the digital task force.

Leader Development Liaison in Various Countries

I helped stabilize A2's leader development program in North India and more recently, I've assisted in establishing the program in a country in South Asia (unnamed for security reasons). It's a privilege to help solidify the leader development program in these countries, in which I help the national leaders in north India to establish the right DNA of the A2 program there. Our national directors have vision for beyond their own borders into neighboring countries.  Since westerners are often not permitted into some of these countries, the graduates of the program in various countries will likely help advance the work in these places. This is precisely why the current work is strategic for the growth of the Church across Asia.

Community Baptist Church

Since returning from Japan in 2011, we have been very active members of our local church. I've served as a board member for two terms, as well as a small group leader coach and a member of the task force for strengthening our communications efforts.

Past Roles

Asian Access Mobilization (Los Angeles)

In October 2000 I became the Director of Mobilization, leading a department that finds missionaries to help start and strengthen Japanese churches. Between 1993 and 2005, my department was responsible for finding, equipping and sending over 600 missionaries to Japan. The majority of these were summer workers, but a good number have been involved in church planting for 1-3 years and a handful of long-term workers.

Human Resource Development (Los Angeles)

From 1993-2000, I served as Director of Human Resource Development at Asian Access. My role was to find, train and equip missionaries, as well as foster a posture of life-long development in our staff.

Asian Access Volunteer Mobilizer (Columbia, SC)

After returning from Tokyo, I attended seminary at Columbia International University, during which time I volunteered time as a recruiter for Asian Access.

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship

While at seminary (1989-'92), I helped to replant a chapter of IVCF at the University of South Carolina (Columbia).

Asian Access Short-Term English Teacher (Tokyo, Japan)

I first went to Tokyo with Asian Access (formerly LIFE Ministries) in 1987 to teach English through a young church plant.

Other Interesting Jobs

I've also worked at a radio station and a golf course while in high school and as a waiter at Spanky's Restaurant in Chapel Hill, NC during college. In my seminary years, I helped pay tuition by being a Resident Assistant at Columbia International University, worked at IBM in the Research Triangle Park, NC one summer and also was a cutlery salesman while completing my internship at The Summit Church in Durham.
